Pet-Safe Pest Control Tips for NYC Apartments

You have roaches AND a curious cat who investigates every corner of your apartment. Or a dog who eats anything that hits the floor. Pest control in a pet household requires extra thought — but it doesn't have to mean choosing between a pest-free apartment and your pet's safety. Here's how to handle it.

Which Pest Control Products Are Safe Around Pets?

Not all pest control products are created equal when it comes to pet safety. Here's the breakdown:

GEL BAITS (cockroach and ant): These are generally the SAFEST professional option for pet households. Gel baits are applied in tiny dots inside cracks, crevices, cabinet hinges, and behind appliances — areas where pests hide but pets can't easily reach. The amount of active ingredient in a single bait dot is extremely small. Even if your pet somehow licked a dot of cockroach bait, the dose would be far below any toxic threshold for a dog or cat.

GRANULAR BAITS (ant): Also relatively safe when applied in cracks and crevices. However, if scattered on floors, pets (especially dogs) may eat them. Always ask your exterminator to apply granular baits in areas your pet can't access.

SNAP TRAPS (mice): Safe for cats and most dogs, though a curious pet could get their nose snapped. Place traps behind appliances and inside cabinets where pets can't reach. Enclosed snap traps (T-Rex style) are pet-safer than open Victor traps.

BAIT STATIONS (rodent): Tamper-resistant bait stations are DESIGNED to be pet-safe. Dogs and cats cannot open the station to access the bait inside. These are the standard for professional rodent treatment in homes with pets.

RESIDUAL SPRAYS: This is where you need to be more careful. Liquid spray treatments applied to baseboards and surfaces are safe AFTER they've dried (usually 2-4 hours), but pets should be out of the room during application and drying. Ask your exterminator how long to wait before allowing pets back into treated areas.

DUST FORMULATIONS: Boric acid dust and diatomaceous earth are low-toxicity to mammals but can cause respiratory irritation if pets inhale them. These should only be applied inside wall voids, behind outlet covers, and in enclosed spaces where pets won't contact them.

DIY Pet-Safe Pest Prevention That Actually Works

These methods are completely safe around pets and genuinely effective as prevention (not treatment — if you have an active infestation, you need professional help):

1. SEAL ENTRY POINTS with copper mesh and caulk. No chemicals involved. Prevents mice and cockroaches from entering.

2. DIATOMACEOUS EARTH (food-grade only) applied in thin layers inside wall voids, behind outlet covers, and under appliances. It works by damaging insect exoskeletons. Don't apply it where pets walk or breathe — inside enclosed spaces only. The food-grade version is non-toxic to mammals if ingested in small amounts.

3. STICKY MONITORS (glue traps) placed behind appliances and inside cabinets to detect pest activity early. Place them where pets can't reach — a dog's paw stuck to a glue trap is a miserable experience for everyone.

4. FOOD STORAGE in sealed containers. This prevents pests AND keeps your pets out of food they shouldn't eat.

5. FIX LEAKS. Eliminating water sources is 100% pet-safe and highly effective against cockroaches.

6. DOOR SWEEPS AND GAP SEALING. Physical barriers require zero chemicals and block rodent entry.

What to AVOID:

  • NEVER use over-the-counter foggers/bombs in a pet household. The pesticide settles on every surface including pet beds, food bowls, and toys.
  • NEVER leave open containers of boric acid where pets can reach them.
  • AVOID mothballs — they're toxic to dogs and cats if ingested.
  • AVOID essential oil 'pest repellents' — many essential oils (tea tree, peppermint, eucalyptus) are toxic to cats.

Specific Concerns: Dogs vs. Cats vs. Other Pets

DOGS: The biggest risk is ingestion. Dogs eat things they shouldn't — including bait stations that smell like food, dead mice, and cockroaches that have been poisoned. Use tamper-resistant bait stations for rodent control. For cockroach treatment, gel baits applied in inaccessible areas are the safest option. If your dog eats a cockroach that ingested gel bait, the secondary exposure is minimal and not a health risk.

CATS: Cats are more sensitive to many pesticides than dogs, particularly pyrethroid insecticides (common in many over-the-counter flea and tick products, but also in some professional pest control sprays). Always tell your exterminator you have cats. They should avoid pyrethroid products or use them only in areas your cat cannot access. Cats are also at risk from essential oil-based 'natural' pest control products — many essential oils are hepatotoxic to cats.

BIRDS: Birds are EXTREMELY sensitive to airborne chemicals. Any aerosol application, fogger, or strongly off-gassing product can be lethal to birds. If you have pet birds, they must be completely removed from the apartment during treatment and for at least 24 hours afterward. Inform your exterminator about birds before they begin.

FISH AND REPTILES: Cover fish tanks and turn off air pumps during any spray application. Chemical particles can enter the water through air pumps and are lethal to fish. Reptile enclosures should also be covered. Both can return to normal after spray treatments have fully dried and the apartment has been ventilated.

SMALL MAMMALS (hamsters, guinea pigs, rabbits): Similar sensitivity to cats. Remove them from treated rooms during application and drying. Their small body size means even small chemical exposures can be significant.

Questions to Ask Your Exterminator Before Treatment

Before your exterminator starts treatment, ask these specific questions:

1. 'What products will you be using today?' — You have a legal right to know (NYC Local Law 37).

2. 'Are any of these products contraindicated for homes with [your pet type]?' — A good exterminator will already ask about pets, but make sure.

3. 'How long should I keep my pets out of treated areas?' — Get a specific time frame, not just 'a while.'

4. 'Will you be using any aerosol or spray applications?' — These are the products with the highest inhalation risk for pets.

5. 'Can you use gel baits instead of sprays in areas my pet accesses?' — For cockroach and ant treatment, this is almost always an option.

6. 'Are the bait stations tamper-resistant?' — For rodent treatment, they should be.

7. 'What should I do if my pet shows signs of exposure?' — Your exterminator should be able to tell you what to watch for and what to do.

A good exterminator will adapt their treatment plan based on your household. If your exterminator dismisses your pet safety concerns or refuses to discuss products, find a different exterminator.

Pro Tip

Create a 'treatment day kit' for your pet: a blanket, their favorite toy, food, and water bowl. When the exterminator arrives, move your pet to an untreated room or take them for a long walk while treatment happens. When you return, open windows to ventilate, and keep your pet out of treated areas until surfaces are fully dry. This simple routine makes treatment day stress-free for everyone.

When to Call a Pro

If you have pets and a pest problem, professional treatment is actually SAFER than DIY — professionals know which products are pet-safe, how to apply them in pet-inaccessible areas, and how to minimize exposure. DIY sprays and foggers are the most common source of pet pesticide exposure because homeowners apply them incorrectly and excessively.
